Regular dental exams are essential for determining the state of your oral health. A Comprehensive Exam will enable us to provide you with the various treatment options you may have to attain and keep your mouth and smile healthy and beautiful. If it’s your first visit to our office or it has been a while since your last dental exam with us, we will do a very thorough Comprehensive Exam. At Sunrise Dental, we perform comprehensive dental exams to provide you with the best treatment recommendations to meet your needs.
Part of your comprehensive dental exam involves going over your medical history. We discuss any medical conditions you currently have or have had in the past. It is also helpful to know the conditions that run in your family. Certain medical conditions can increase your risk for oral health issues or can impact the types of treatments you receive. Oral health issues can also impact certain medical conditions. In addition to your medical history, we also review any medications you are taking, your lifestyle habits, such as smoking and alcohol use, as well as your diet.
It is extremely important that we have a complete list of all medications that you are taking as well as any medications you may be allergic to. If you take a number of medications, we would appreciate it if you could bring in a complete list, including dosage and frequencies.
We perform a complete oral health assessment during your comprehensive exam. Your teeth are checked for cavities, cracks, failing restorations, abnormal wear and other conditions such as your bite including crowding and rotations of your teeth. All of your existing dental restorations, such as fillings, veneers, crowns, and bridges are checked. Your gums are checked for redness, swelling, bleeding and recession. Periodontal (gum) pockets are measured to screen for gum disease. Your TMJ is checked for any popping or clicking. Your airway is checked and you are screened for other risk factors for Obstructive Sleep Apnea which can be a life threatening medical issue.
Another part of assessing your dental health is an oral cancer screening. This screening is a quick and painless process. We examine and palpate the soft tissues in and around your mouth, including your neck, looking for signs of any abnormalities. We also use the VELscope Vx Enhanced Oral Assessment System, which uses harmless light to check for potentially precancerous and cancerous cells. Detecting oral cancer in its earliest stages is essential for getting the treatment you need right away.
In addition to examining the visible structures in your mouth, we also take digital X-rays. These radiographic images provide us with a look into the hidden parts of your mouth such as the areas between your teeth, tooth roots, and the bone that supports your teeth. These images enable us to check for cavities between your teeth, root damage, bone loss, abscesses, cysts, impacted teeth, and more. X-ray images allow us to get a complete picture of your oral health. This enables us to provide you with a personal treatment plan to address any treatment needs you may have. Read more about digital x-rays at Sunrise Dental.
Following your exam, we will spend time reviewing any findings and discussing any chief concerns you may be having. We will explain your treatment options using the x-rays and intra-oral photos that we took earlier in your visit. We will strive to answer any and all questions that you may have about your treatment plan. With complex cases requiring additional diagnostic and treatment planning time, we will want to have you back for a second consultation.
We would love to be your family dentist!
