Can Teens Get Invisalign Braces?
February is Children’s Dental Health Month, and orthodontic treatments are often an important part of a teenager’s dental health. Many teenagers get braces, but can they use Invisalign instead? Below we answer some of the most common questions parents ask about Invisalign for teens.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign gently straightens teeth using a series of clear, plastic aligners. We use 3D scans of your teen’s mouth to create each individual set of aligners. Changing the aligners, or trays, every one or two weeks gradually repositions their teeth with very little pain.
Invisalign vs. Braces
Invisalign and traditional braces both correct common alignment issues in teens and adults. Invisalign can take from nine to fifteen months, but most Invisalign patients complete their treatment in less than a year. Traditional braces take one to two years to correct most orthodontic problems.
Unlike metal braces, Invisalign aligners can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing. Teens can still enjoy all of their favorite foods and clean their teeth normally. Many teens prefer Invisalign as an alternative to metal braces because the clear aligners are less noticeable and more comfortable.
Will Wearing the Invisalign Aligners Hurt?
Because the process is so gradual, most Invisalign patients experience only minor discomfort. Your teen might feel a little pain or pressure when they start a new aligner. We recommend starting a tray at bedtime, so that the new adjustments can begin while asleep.
Invisalign for Teens—What to Expect
Teens getting Invisalign will need to make some lifestyle adjustments. Invisalign is a big commitment. The aligners won’t work if they aren’t worn properly. Recommended wear time is 22 hours a day, so they will have to get used to snacking less and wearing their aligners while they sleep.
We’ll set appointments every six to eight weeks to check on your teen’s progress and provide them with their next set of aligners. After completing their Invisalign treatment, your teen will still need to wear a plastic retainer at night to ensure that their teeth stay aligned.
Will Invisalign Work for Any Mouth?
Invisalign can correct many problems, like crooked or crowded teeth or an abnormal bite. However, Invisalign will not work for everyone—if your teen’s orthodontic problems are more severe, metal braces might be the only option.
