Is There a Minimum or Maximum Age for Invisalign?

A great smile makes a lasting impression on everyone you meet. If you have crooked teeth, gaps, an underbite, or overbite, Invisalign can help! There’s no perfect age for Invisalign. Whether you’re thirteen or thirty, seven or fifty-seven, you can improve your smile and your dental health with Invisalign.

Misaligned teeth impact your quality of life—they can cause pain and difficulty chewing or speaking, and could even impact your mental health. A less-than-perfect smile can affect your confidence during business meetings or make you feel shy at social engagements.

If you’re wondering whether Invisalign could work for you, the friendly dentists at Sunrise Dental in Glendale can answer all of your questions. Read on to learn more about the Invisalign process, the age limits for Invisalign, and how you can schedule a free consultation.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a set of clear, plastic aligners made from 3D scans taken of your unique mouth. With sets or “trays” designed to be worn for one to two weeks, each new tray gently moves and realigns your teeth, gradually making them straighter set by set.

The entire Invisalign process normally takes between nine to 15 months, although we see most of our patients finish in under a year. You’ll need to wear your Invisalign aligners for 22 hours every day for the best results, but you can remove them when eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth.

You will need to visit our office every six to eight weeks to have your next sets of aligners made, so there is a time commitment. However, our patients all say it’s worth it, because the Invisalign process is quicker and less painful than traditional braces

What is the minimum age for Invisalign?

There is no official minimum age for Invisalign, but the earliest we recommend starting Invisalign is seven years old. In general, seven is the soonest that children can start wearing braces. However, getting young children to wear their aligners for 22 hours a day can sometimes present problems.

Some children might be better candidates for traditional braces, but kids with a high maturity level do well with Invisalign. In most cases, parents can opt to wait until their children hit their teenage years to start the Invisalign process.

Is there an age limit for Invisalign?

There is no age limit for Invisalign! We frequently see patients in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s successfully complete an Invisalign treatment. The Invisalign process may take longer in full-grown adults than in children or teens, but it can correct serious dental issues at any age.

Most adults prefer Invisalign aligners because they’re more convenient and don’t affect their appearance. Adult Invisalign patients are generally more motivated than younger patients to see results. They are willing to follow their prescribed treatment and wear their aligners as long as necessary to get a perfect smile.
