Step-by-Step Process for Getting Dentures

You do not need to suffer from tooth loss! If you are missing teeth, dentures can help you eat and speak normally, as well as smile confidently. The dentures procedure may seem overwhelming, but your friendly dentists at Sunrise Dental in Peoria will make the transition an easy one. We will fabricate custom-fitted dentures to replace your missing teeth and restore your smile.

Complications of Tooth Loss

When you suffer tooth loss, your whole life is affected. Losing your teeth makes it incredibly difficult to eat, which can impact your digestion and nutrition. Your speech suffers, and you may have difficulty communicating or feel self-conscious about talking. Tooth loss also has a significant impact on your smile and your confidence. Replacing missing teeth with dentures will restore all the normal functions of your mouth and improve your quality of life.

Causes of Tooth Loss

Gum disease, or periodontitis, is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults. Tooth loss may also result from facial trauma during a car accident, a fall, or a sports injury. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, can cause breakage and wear that lead to tooth loss. If a root canal procedure fails, or if a tooth breaks or splits in half, that tooth will need to be extracted.

What Are Dentures?

Full Dentures

When most people think about dentures, they usually envision full dentures. This type of prosthetic replaces an entire arch of teeth, either the top arch, the bottom arch, or both. Full dentures are made from acrylic resin molded to fit impressions of your mouth. Their base sits directly on your gums.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures replace a section of missing teeth when the rest of the teeth in your arch are still stable. Like a full denture, a partial denture is an acrylic prosthetic made from an impression of your mouth. Partial dentures usually have clasps that attach to your remaining teeth to hold the partial denture in place.

What Is the Process for Getting Dentures?

  • Step 1: First, we will perform a complete periodontal examination and carefully extract any unhealthy teeth.
  • Step 2: After your gums have completely healed, we will take precise measurements and a mold of your mouth.
  • Step 3: Next, we will create a set of dentures from the model that perfectly fits your mouth and your other teeth.
  • Step 4: Finally, we fit you with your dentures and make any adjustments needed to ensure a comfortable fit.

Caring for Your Dentures

Just like natural teeth, dentures can accumulate stains, plaque, and calculus. Remove dentures and rinse them after eating to eliminate food debris. Brush your dentures at least once a day to remove plaque, adhesives, and any other residue. Store them in pure, room temperature water or a cleaning solution, depending on your dentist’s recommendation. Always rinse your dentures thoroughly in cool water before you put them back on.
